Creating a Championship Table

Modified on Wed, 23 Aug, 2023 at 10:50 AM

The Timing has a Championship module where all your Championship tables are stored. Alpha Timing’s championship management is designed to drastically reduce the effort involved in managing championship points.  Once a championship has been configured, the points are automatically calculated, including dropped scores, bonus points, abandoned rounds etc. Championships are managed by clicking on the Trophy icon.

The left hand side of the screen shows a list of configured championships, with the points shown in the remaining screen area.

The points can be printed either to a printer or to a PDF document by clicking the print button, or exported to excel using the export to excel button.

Unlike race results, championship tables are not automatically uploaded to the results website as most championship coordinators prefer to check and confirm the points before making them public. Uploading them is as simple as clicking the Upload to web button.

The championship points are automatically updated as soon as a session with championship points is issued by the timekeeper.  This means that any corrections need to be made by re-opening the relevant round in the timing application, correcting the results and re-issuing them.  The most common issue is if a competitor’s membership status is incorrectly set, especially where non-members do not score points.

It is possible to manually over-type a competitor’s score on the championship table screen, but this should only be used in exceptional circumstances and correcting the original results is the preferred and recommended method of making corrections.

Each table must be associated with a class and when you create an event that uses a class with a championship, you will be prompted to select the championship and round associated with that event (if applicable).

Click the New Championship button at the top of the list of Championships to bring up the configuration panel for your new championship.

Give your championship a name and select the class from the dropdown. If the class isn’t there you will need to create it in the Class tab in Settings (Gear icon) menu. Make sure the timing code matches the import source.

There are then a few options to select. The Archived option will hide the championship from the list of Championships when importing an event, which you can do when it is completed. This does not hide the table from the Results website. They can be viewed by ticking show archived championships above the list of championships on the main championship screen.

Tick the Low-high points scheme box to use a low points for wins i.e. where 1 point is first place. We strongly recommend that a descending championship points scheme is used (with the winner getting the most points), however in the rare circumstances where the winner of a round is awarded the lowest points, this option can be ticked. You will need to make sure your point scheme is set correctly so any competitor who did not race is awarded maximum points.

The Must Count Rounds Entered as Non-member will include a competitors rounds where they entered an event without membership. The Members only box will only add competitors to the table that have Club Membership.

If you want to have your table upload to the Results website automatically after each round tick the Auto Upload to web box. The Show driver number will show the competitors number on the table.

Set the number of rounds and set the Season code to the year or unique identifier. This will also be used to organise the results on the Results website.  Then set the minimum entries a competitor needs to make before they’re included on the championship table.

You can then configure the championship to match your event format. You can combine the round scores, but this is not recommended.

You can then set number of rounds or individual races to drop (if applicable). You can also set when you want the rounds to start being dropped i.e. for halfway through a 10 round season you'd set this to 5 to drop from Round 5.

You can also set rules on whether to split sub classes and/or separate novices or whether competitors can drop 0 scores or race exclusions and disqualifications. You can also set the maximum zero or missing scores to count in the table.

There is also an option to set whether a round MUST count, where a round has been abandoned (so you no longer want the round to be included and these rounds will not be counted as dropped rounds) and whether a round is Mandatory for the competitor to be included in the championship.

Bonus points can also be awarded to competitors who started any session in the specified round.

Once you are happy with your selection, click the Save button at the top of the panel to create your table.

Preparing your Timing for a new season

In order to prepare for a new season, a new championship table needs to be set up, and the completed championships archived.

Step 1: To do this, open the timing and then click on the Championships icon (Trophy). Then click on a complete championship, and click the Copy championship button at the top.

Step 2: Enter the name for the championship (usually the class name followed by the year) and enter the full year into the new championship code box (e.g. 2023).

Once done click the Save button at the top and the championship will be ready to run for the following year. The new table will appear at the top of the list of championships.

Step 3: Now click Edit championship on the completed championship, tick the Archived option box and click Save.

Now select the next completed championship and repeat the steps above until all championships that are being run in the new season have been copied and the old ones archived.
